Game Overview

Players will need to use a variety of traversal and combat methods to escape a city that is actively trying to prevent the player from leaving.

Gameplay Loop

Players will switch back and forth between 2 sections of gameplay, A and B.

A- Parkour and traversing the city

  • Players will be able to practice with the weapons and tool movement system while they fight the occasional enemy that gets in their way
  • During this section, if players are wandering around the city there is a chance that the city will “come alive”
    • Enemies will spawn around the player
    • Lights will change
    • The purpose of this is to force the player to use the space in a new way and mix up the gameplay loop so they don't get bored running around the city with nothing happening
    • Will occur on a timer so we can adjust how frequently this occurs (Perhaps when certain criteria are met, enemy number killed, distance traveled.

B- Missions

  • Players will get missions that direct them toward certain areas in the city
  • These areas will have more open spaces such as parking lots, courtyards, etc.. to give the player space to fight off groups of enemies while using a few set pieces to move around and use to their advantage
  • These will further the story and move the player toward the end goal of escaping the city and beating the game

Equipment

The player has access to a weapon and three “tools” that modify their movement in unique and interesting ways.

Definitions:

Tool - Affects the player’s movement

Weapon - Affect world / enemies

Main Weapon

Kinetic Pistol

  • Functions as a pistol, but if the player moves fast enough using their tools, the weapon can build up a charge. This deals more damage and allows the bullets to ricochet onto other enemies

Tool options:

Dash tool

  • An omnidirectional dash that propels the player in the direction they’re aiming
  • Can also be used to damage enemies

Propulsion Cannon

  • Cannon that can be used as a rocket jump and has an area of effect to disorient/displace enemies

Overdrive tool

  • Can be used to lock onto enemies and slow down time. When a target is acquired and the input released, the player teleports to the enemy

UI / UX

Weapons and tools will have diegetic UI

  • The UI will be contained on the weapon itself which will make it easier when players change loadouts, so there doesn't have to be a canvas switch everytime they change weapons and tools

Story

Overall Premise

The player is a hacker, trapped in the evil cyberpunk city. The player parkours around from combat area to combat area in each mission. Each mission goal is to destroy a generator that is keeping the energy walls active. Player wants to destroy all the generators to kill the AI. The AI is slowly paying more attention to the player as they progress.
